West Waushaccum Pond, because of its natural, relatively undeveloped character, is an enjoyable setting for a day's fishing. Several thousand trout are stocked annually. Depending on availability, a percentage of the annual trout allotment is comprised of brown trout, with the hope that some will carryover and grow to a larger size. The best warm water fishing is probably in the Quag, which can be accessed from the main pond through a shallow channel beneath an old railroad crossing. This relatively shallow and weedy section is a sure producer of largemouth bass.
West Waushaccum Pond Description
An infertile, 142-acre cold water pond, West Waushaccum is located within the Wachusett Reservoir watershed and is under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan District Commission. West Waushaccum Pond is one of the more popular stocked trout ponds in Worcester County. There is no boat ramp, but car top boats and canoes can be lifted over the guardrail along Gates Road for launching. Vehicles are commonly parked along Gates Road. It is important to note that no gas-operated outboard motors are allowed. Electric trolling motors are permissible, however. The opening and closing dates for fishing at West Waushaccum presently coincide with those for Wachusett Reservoir: April 1 to November 30. Fish Populations: bluegills, pumpkinseeds, largemouth bass, yellow perch, chain pickerel, white sucker, yellow bullhead, rainbow trout, brown bullhead, rock bass, white perch and golden shiners.
