Fort Pond Description

Fort Pond is an average size (76 acre) two-story pond located in Lancaster just north of Route 2 at the Lunenburg Road exit. The water is clear in color with a transparency of almost 10 feet. The depth averages about 30 feet with a maximum depth of 45 feet. The shoreline is 90% developed with year round houses, camps and cottages. Aquatic weeds are scant except in some of the coves. Boat access is available at a gravel ramp off of Fort Pond Road. Shoreline access is limited to the area immediately adjacent to the ramp. Fish Populations: largemouth bass, chain pickerel, rainbow trout, brown trout, yellow perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead, white sucker, rainbow smelt and American eel. The most abundant gamefish are the largemouth bass and the most abundant panfish are the yellow perch.

Fort Pond is a managed trout pond receiving some 4,000 trout annually during the spring and fall stocking periods. An occasional large brown trout is reported from this pond. Although a six-pound largemouth bass was taken during the survey, few fish of this size are present. However, bass in the 8"-12" size range are very numerous. A good population of yellow perch with many in the 9"-11" size range makes this pond a good bet for ice fishing.
